Representation Through Humiliation

God's Rotweiler

Conservative cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (He has since chosen the nom de plume "Benedict XVI") has gained Pope-hood today. Unfortunately no one really lke the guy. Huge uproar this afternoon about his Nazi Youth glory days. The guy claims he only jooined when he was forced to, but locals of his German hometown cry foul. They say he (14 at the time) willingly joined when despite groups of his peers resisting the Nazi takeover.

Personally, I'm not surprised the guy was chosen. The church was looking for a sprinter rather than a long-distance runner if you get my analogy, and the cardinal's age fit the description.

It's more than a little ridiculous that a former Nazi is currently in charge of arguably the most influential church on the planet, but it's not like he's going to start encouraging discrimination and all that good stuff.

All in all, I'm glad the Pope frenzy is over and that everything will be soon back in order, even if I'm not thrilled with the new head honcho.
